A new law signed on July 10 (SB 134, Act 160, SLH 2018) makes all University of Hawaiʻi campuses and properties tobacco and smoke-free locations. The law includes, but is not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, vaping apparatus, chewing tobacco and pipes.
West Hawai‘i residents got to “test drive” the Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui campus March 21 and 22 during College Experience Days. Visitors were able to take tours of the campus, participate in daily activities and even sit in on classes that were underway.
Members of Hawai‘i Community College’s Alpha Psi Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society attended the 2018 Pacific Regional Convention at Leeward Community College where they were recognized with chapter and individual awards. These awards included:
Two Information Technology (IT) students participated in the Akamai Internship Program in the summer of 2017, which provided the students with valuable hands-on experience.
Christopher Roof interned at the Institute for Astronomy. He programmed using Python scripts to collect weather data and to store the results in a PostgreSQL database. He has been retained as a part-time observatory technician working on new projects in BASH scripting. He graduated from the Hawaiʻi CC IT program in May 2017 and is now a computer science major at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.
Hawai‘i Community College proudly releases the names of the following students who have achieved Dean’s List honors for the fall 2017 semester. The Dean’s List requires students to have completed 12 or more credits for a letter grade achieving a grade point average of at least 3.5 (B+) for the semester. The attached 299 students have attained this distinction. Please join us in congratulating them!
Hawaiʻi Community College Professor Gene Harada has been recognized with the University of Hawaiʻi Willard Wilson Award for Distinguished Service. He is a proud Hawaiʻi CC alumnus and has taught at the school for almost 27 years. He is described as a true mentor to his students, training them to be professional, to show up on time and to do things right the first time.

As we enter February, we enter the heart of the spring semester and a very busy time of the academic year. It's a stretch of months filled with events, culminating in our commencement ceremonies in Hilo and at the Pālamanui campus in Kona. Here's a snapshot of what's happening in the next few weeks.
Representatives from Hawai'i Community College's Student Government traveled to O'ahu on January 17 to meet with Hawai'i Island legislators and talk about issues affecting community college students. Their visit coincided with the start of the legislative session.
