DIRECTIONS FOR UPDATING
YOUR HOMEPAGE AND WEB SITE
These directions were written for English 60
students who have access to WebCT accounts and to IBM-compatible computers with software
for Windows 95 and Netscape Communicator 4.0 and above.
- In WebCT Workspace, go to Class Mail.
- Open the message from your teacher marked, "Your Web Site Default
Page."
- Click attachment.
- You will see listed a file entitled <default.htm>.
- This is your home page with your first writing assignment.
- Keep the file name as it is.
- Save the file to your own disk.
- You will probably need to guide the computer to the 3 1/2 floppy drive.
- After you have saved the file to your disk, open Netscape to
the Composer.
- This is not the same as the Compose Article in Workspace.
- Netscape Composer is the html editor for Netscape and can
be found in the file menu at the top of the Netscape screen. Html
stands for hypertext markup language. It is the coding used for making
web pages.
- Click the file menu, then open page.
- Click the button that says Composer.
- If the file name <default.htm> appears in the box, click open.
- If not, you will need to click choose file and find
<default.htm> on your disk. Once you have located it, you can click open.
- Your home page will appear, and you can update it by adding an icon or
picture and a link.
- When you have completed your revision, return your page to your
instructor via Class Mail as an attachment. He will then upload your
revised web page into your web site folder. You can send icons and pictures as
separate attachments.
- Save these directions. You can follow them when updating any
page of your web site; only the file name will change.
