BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER CHECKLIST
FOR TEACHERS USING THE READING LAB AND AIMS

  1. Schedule AIMS orientation for the third week of the semester. If you will be using the LC classroom for this, you will need to reserve it by signing the LC Reservations Notebook.  Any other time throughout the semester when you plan for your students to use the LC classroom and/or computers, you will need to sign the book to reserve the day and time you require.  The LC is becoming a popular computer center so reserving the spaces well in advance is very important.

  2. By the end of the first or beginning of the second week of instruction, print out a summary class list from your Banner web site for each class that will use the Reading Lab and bring them to Kalyan.  This list will provide the Banner ID and name of each student. The tutors will use your lists to assign AIMS computer identification numbers.

  3. Mark clearly any student who has been in the AIMS Program previously. This allows the tutors to find the progress chart for such students.

  4. Check your class folders for accuracy of names and other pertinent details a couple of days BEFORE your scheduled orientation.  This will provide us time to make missing folders for particular students and to correct errors in student security numbers, AIMS entry reading levels, etc.

  5. Check in pencil the starting level of each student on the AIMS progress chart.  Do NOT use pen because this will allow the reuse of progress charts.

  6. Identify early in the semester those individuals who have the potential to "skip" the next reading level. For example, some ENG 20R students may be able to do English 102 work by the following semester once they have acquired confidence with basic reading and study skills.  Those students have the potential to "skip" English 021 but must demonstrate this potential by completing AIMS work through Level K.  Early identification of such a student will allow him or her a better chance to achieve this goal.  Be sure to notify the reading lab coordinator about these students so the lab can help these individuals achieve their goals.

  7. Get to know, early in the semester, the tutors who will be assisting with your classes using AIMS by checking the tutor schedule available at the Reading desk.

  8. Please give Kalyan your syllabi with designated LAB days so tutors can get folders ready for your classes.

  9. If you have any special instructions for your students, please let Gwen or Kalyan know so they may pass these on to the tutors.
