Deadlines and Scheduling:
The routine deadline for WI designation proposals (new and renewing) is the Monday after the first 3 weeks of instruction in the Fall and Spring Semesters. Please watch for email reminders and check with your department chair. (Earning or renewing a designation in Fall will allow the instructor to teach the course as a WI as soon as that Spring. Earning or renewing the designation in Spring will allow the instructor to teach the course as a WI as soon as that Summer.) Scheduling of all WI courses is dependent on the Department Chair and Deans.
Note to instructors: Courses with a Foundations designation (FQ, FG, FW) are not eligible for WI designation. Contact your department for updated information on Foundations proposals that may affect your course.
- The WI Coordinator will issue a call for proposals at the beginning of each semester (for courses scheduled to be offered in the following semester or later).
- The Division Chair or WI committee members will direct instructors to the materials below:
- HawCC Writing Intensive Guidance & Evaluation Checklist for Proposals (updated 8/21/2026)
- Instructors seeking WI designation for their courses should complete the Application for Writing Intensive (WI) Designation for New Course Proposals and Renewals via Kuali and attach a syllabus and schedule and other optional supporting materials to show that the course meets the WI guidelines. Note: Once you begin a proposal, you can save work to return later. To retrieve your saved draft, go to the main UH Kuali Build page (not the application link), log in with UH credentials, and find your draft under the Submissions tab at the top (you can find your in-progress drafts and submitted proposals there).
- About renewals: Instructors who want to maintain WI designation for their active courses nearing their 5-year renewal deadline should apply for renewal using the abbreviated version of the proposal form in Kuali Build.
- Once submitted, the proposal will go to the appropriate Department Chair. The Department Chair will review the proposal and double check if the syllabus aligns with the Course Outline of Record. If approved by the Department Chair, it will continue to the WI Committee Chair, who will share the proposal, syllabus, and supporting materials with the WI Committee for review.
- The WI committee and the Department Chair will follow these guidelines when approving courses:
- The proposed course and instructor must be approved for a WI course designation. (ENG 204W: Creative Writing and ENG 215: Research Writing - Hum/SSCI are designated at the course level.)
- Lecturers may propose writing intensive courses, but actual scheduling of all WI courses is dependent on factors considered by the Department Chairs and administration.
- The WI Committee will promptly review all WI course proposals and syllabi to make sure that they meet the established WI guidelines according to the course eligibility requirements and HawCC Writing Intensive Guidance & Evaluation Checklist for Proposals .
- Recommendations for approval will be forwarded within Kuali Build to the:
- Department Chair
- Dean
- Curriculum support staff
Instructor
The WI Chair will prepare a list of approved and renewed course designations for the Academic Senate each AY in the Fall and Spring.
- The WI Committee may request revisions and/or additional materials from the instructor during the review process. This may require a short timeline for the instructor's response (1-2 weeks) to make sure the approved WI designations are in place in time for course scheduling.
- Once approved, the course and instructor will be added to the Active WI Course List.
- If not approved, the instructor will be provided with constructive feedback by the WI Committee and may apply again as soon as the next deadline.
- Department chairs and deans will work with instructors to decide which active WI courses to offer as WI each semester and will schedule accordingly.
- At the end of each semester, students and instructors will submit evaluation surveys for each WI course. The WI Committee supplies a student survey and an instructor survey to be completed each semester for each WI course.
- If a WI course on the Active List has not been offered for five years and the instructor has not applied for and has not been granted a renewal in the required semester, the course/instructor will be removed from the list.
