Volcano

  • Lava

    Flowing is the fire of Pele.
    Smooth pahoehoe lave, moves gracefully across the rough 'a'a.

Beaches

  • Hapuna
    The beautiful white sands of sunny Hapuna Beach, provides a great locale for sun worshippers and water enthusiasts alike. It's locted on the Kona side of the island near Kawaihae, just off Highway 19.

  • Hilo Bay
    Nani wale ke 'ike aku I Hilo one
    Beautiful to see is Hilo Bay
    Gentle waves kiss the lovely black sands of Hilo Bay, site of many state and local canoe competitions. Snowcapped Mauna Kea overlooks the quaint town of Hilo.


Tropical Rain Forest

  • Awapuhi
    Honi ana I ke ala o na pua u'i Hawai'i
    Kissing the fragrances of the flowers of Hawai'i
    'Awapuhi'ula'ula (red ginger), is an ornamental plant found growing in the wild and in the gardens of many Hawai'i island residents.

  • Banyan Tree
    Canopies of old banyan trees provide a wealth of shade and beauty at many local parks. The long aerial roots eventually develop into additional trunks.

    Drentched in the waters of Akaka
    Breathtaking Akaka Falls cascades an amazing 442 feet. Visitors can often hear the melodic sounds of island birds when walking through the park's cool, lush tropical vegetation.

Mauna Kea / Mauna Loa

  • Snowcapped
    Ke kuahiwi kaulana o Keawe
    The famous mountain of Keawe
    Mauna Kea stands a majestic 13,796 feet above sea level, making it the tallest mountain in the world. Its name literally means White Mountain, and refers to its often snowcapped peak. In days of old, this island was known as Moku o Keawe, the island of Keawe, named after ruling chief Keawe.

Sports / Leisure

  • Fishing
    Local residents enjoy shoreline fishing in the clear blue waters of Reed's Bay in Hilo.
  • Canoe Paddling
    A mixed crew (men & women) paddle in the warm waters of Hilo Bay. Exciting regattas are held island and Statewide.
