1. A quorum was established and acting Chair Marlow called the meeting to order at 12:08 p.m.

 

2. Chair’s Report

A handout detailing the meeting between Dr. Barbra Beno, Director of Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, and Faculty Senate Chairs was distributed and discussed.

Text Box: Discussion around the wording “or instructors consent” and the question if there would be permanent faculty available to teach these classes occurred.  A call to question passed by a 2/3rds majority.  Items 15-16 were placed in a block vote and Faculty Senate approval passed unanimously.

Text Box: Questions concerning English Placement levels and consistency with criteria for transfer occurred.  Senator Yamane pointed out that these proposed changes followed guidelines at Leeward Community College and that articulation would occur across the UHCC system.  He also stated that Business Technology courses are at the 100 level in every college in the system except HawCC.  Others pointed out that there are 100 level courses presently offered that have no prerequisites.   Items 17-21 were placed in a block vote and Faculty Senate approval passed. 22. Certificates of Completion (CC):  Change in Program Requirements: from 23 to 24 credits

Text Box: This proposal enables students to be eligible for more semesters of financial aid.  Item 22 was approved by the Faculty Senate.  Yes 26, No 0, Abstain 1.

       24. Hist 274 Writing Personal History

Text Box: Discussions occurred.  It was pointed out that this class in listed as an English class in other colleges in the system.  Response included that the class was initially designed to ensure preservation of family history and to help initiate discussion of one’s family’s place in history.  This generational knowledge is disappearing in Hawai`i.  Those presenting the proposal see it not as an autobiographical writing class, but as a history class for historical preservation.  Others pointed out that it would be possible to cross referenced Hist. 274 as an English class at a later date, and that the vote today does not exclude that possibility.  Item 24 was approved unanimously by the Faculty. Text Box: Discussions occurred.  Separating the Substance Abuse program from the Human Services alpha has social science department support and these courses are listed at other colleges in the system under Subs.  This change does not interfere with other Human Service Programs. Additionally, there are plans to expand this program into an AS degree. This further justifies the present proposal.  A call to question passed unanimously.  Items 38-41 were placed in a block vote and Faculty Senate approval passed unanimously.

Text Box: Discussion occurred.  It was pointed out that writing requirements in this course require levels equal to the completion of English 100.  Presenter requested that the proposal be accepted now, and she would make modifications later. Item 42 was approved unanimously by the Faculty Senate
