COMMENTS: The Senate Program Review team commends the ABRP for
their effort in conducting courses under unfavorable teaching conditions,
including use of obsolete equipment, poor lighting, unsafe conditions, and lack
of adequate classroom space. The ABRP
faculty exhibit their resourcefulness in utilizing donated auto parts and using
outdated equipment in carrying out their teaching duties. They have an excellent record of finding
employment for their graduates, and have developed very good community
support.
The ABRP program review
states that students earning an ASE certification receive higher pay, have an
easier time when seeking employment, and have a higher professional image. The
ABRP faculty should remind the students of the invaluable benefit of staying
with the program so that they can be well prepped to take the ASE certification
exams as well as to obtain entry level employment in the trade and related
occupations.
Action: The
plan for construction of a new spray booth to replace the 25 year old one is a
very good step for
schedule of equipment
updates. These improvements should
prioritize safety issues, as these concerns are paramount.
It is suggested that the ABRP
faculty should work with high school instructors, councilors and the college
community to better prepare students for the program. Another suggestion is to include other
courses for students such as ECON 20 or an art class adapted for the needs of
these students to provide the necessary
stimulation for the
development of their creative endeavors (as mentioned in the HawCC Community
Development Mission Statement). An intangible benefit could have them stay the
course and complete the program.
We believe the completion and
implementation of the Action Plan Tasks as stated by the ABRP faculty in the
program review are appropriate and are likely to lead to program improvement.

COMMENTS: The Senate Executive Committee
congratulates the Media Arts Program for the establishment of the program and
the steady increase in enrollment. We
also commend the only full time faculty member for her hard work and dedication
to the program. It is nice to know that
the Media Arts curriculum is in the process of being articulated with other
colleges in the UH System. This should
provide flexibility for our local students to continue with their studies after
obtaining our DMA certificate as well as help them in job searches outside of
the
Action: With the increase in enrollment and the potential of creating an A.S. degree in Digital Media Arts, it is essential that more classroom space be assigned to the program.
Since this is a new program, it is especially important to develop a database to keep track of its graduates. As stated in one of the three program goals, it is important for the program to develop a mechanism in recruiting at least 30% of its total students from the Native Hawaiian population. Also, feedback from the Digital Media Arts Advisory Board should provide a guide to the future direction of this program when the Board meets in December 2007.
From the information provided in the Program Review, the Digital Media Arts program has great potential to develop its AS and CA degrees. If the enrollment increases and/or holds steady, a second position is definitely needed to help the development of the program. Since this is the first program review, we need to monitor the graduation rate and statistics of future full time majors so as to better plan for the expansion of faculty and personnel of the program. Meanwhile, more temporary hires should be allocated to the program so that the only instructor of the program does not experience major burn out.

COMMENTS: : The program review was both well written and presented. The narrative provides clear evidence of the quality and rigor of this program.
The IT Program amply meets the mission of the community college system as well as the mission statement defined by the 2002-2010 Strategic Plan. In addition, the program directly addresses two of the four cornerstones.

COMMENTS: The Business Office provides an effective, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure to support learning. The services and infrastructure support through fiscal management are essential to the institution, programs, and other units for the successful pursuit of their respective contributions to the mission and cornerstones of the College. The Bus Off is functioning with less than optimal personnel. Encourage immediate attention to the present vacancies in order to ensure overall efficiency of service.

COMMENTS: Meets mission of College largely through hiring HR is an Administrative function, and in order to answer the questions above, I needed to really think “outside of the box” about how HR fit the Instructional Review. A Unit Review template tailored for HR should be provided in the future.Action: PASS
