Draft PROPOSAL (11/19/07) Draft
HawCC Guidelines Regarding Children of Our Students
In general,
the workplace and classroom are not appropriate places for non-student, minor
children to be present on a frequent or continuing basis. However, family needs and responsibilities
may require students to bring a child on campus for a limited period of
time. A student who decides to bring a
child to campus should be respectful of others’ needs for a professional educational
and work environment. These guidelines
are intended to promote respect for the needs of all parties impacted by the
presence of minor children as well as to protect the health and safety of the
child and the college community.
The
following guidelines apply to all students bringing non-student, minor children
to campus:
- Parents and guardians are
responsible for ensuring that the child behaves appropriately. If the faculty member or administrator
responsible for the class or workplace finds a child is disruptive, the
parent/guardian must remove the child from the situation.
- A parent or guardian must
provide adult supervision at all times.
Children should not be left unattended. In the absence of a supervisory adult,
minor children between the ages of 13 and 17, who are engaging in
disruptive or dangerous behavior and whose parent/guardian cannot be
located, will be asked to leave campus.
In the absence of a supervisory adult, minor children below age 13,
who are engaging in disruptive or dangerous behavior and whose
parent/guardian cannot be located, will be reported by the Campus Security
Officer to the Police, in the interest of the children’s safety.
- Children are specifically
prohibited from shop and lab classrooms and the Learning and Testing
centers. Children shall not be allowed
to enter high risk areas such as mechanical rooms, garages, rooftops, or
areas where heavy equipment or power tools are in use. Children should not be allowed to play
in stairwells, doorways, roadways, and/or parking areas.
- Children should not be brought
to campus if they are ill with a contagious disease.
- Parents and guardians are
responsible and liable for all injuries or damages caused by their
children. (Haw.Rev.Stat. §577-3). Parents and guardians, who are HawCC
students, are responsible for any injuries or damages sustained by their
child while on campus and are subject to the HawCC Student Conduct Code.
- Non-student, minor children are
not allowed on any field trips related to any college class.
- Only under occasional
extenuating circumstances should a child be in a classroom while class is
in session. Children may be
allowed in the classroom under the supervision of the parent or guardian
in the following circumstance:
- Alternate arrangements for
childcare are impractical or impossible; and
- The faculty member responsible
for the classroom has granted permission.
If the child is disruptive or interferes with instruction, the
faculty member may require the student and child to leave.
- A child should not be left
unattended while the parent/guardian is attending class or conducting
other business or social functions on campus.
- Students may not bring children
to classrooms on days of examinations.
