Academic Senate Resolution 2.14.06     Distance Education at HawCC

 

 

Whereas, Distance Education (DE) on the East HawCC campus has been in existence since the early 1990’s and has increased in activity since then; and

 

Whereas, VCAA Dykstra has requested that the Academic Senate establish an ad hoc committee to review DE activities and make recommendations; and

 

Whereas, The Academic Senate understands the importance and growth of DE and the need of establishing a means to formally coordinate DE offerings and support services for HawCC; and

 

Whereas, The Academic Senate is aware of the importance of systematically evaluating the quality and effectiveness of all HawCC’s “instructional programs, regardless of location or means of delivery,” including DE  as required by the ACCJC Standards for Accreditation (Standard II.A.1., etc.) ; and

 

Whereas, The Academic Senate is aware that the UH system has several DE policies such as, E 5.204 (http://www.hawaii.edu/offices/app/dl/dlpolicies.html), BOR Policy 5.10 (http://www.hawaii.edu/offices/app/dl/policy%257e1.htm#BOR510), BOR Policy Section 5.14

University of Hawaii Centers, and a web site for DE (http://www.hawaii.edu/dl/general/);  

 

Now therefore, be it resolved That the Academic  Senate establishes a Distance Education (DE) ad hoc committee with representation from instruction, student and academic support to review issues and make  recommendations regarding Distance Education at HawCC; and

 

Be it further resolved That the  Academic Senate DE ad hoc committee use the Guidelines for Implementation presented in the ACCJC Distance Learning Manual, pp. 8-14 and relevant UH system policies to review and make recommendations for HawCC’s distance education effort; and

 

Be it further resolved That the Academic Senate DE ad hoc committee report its findings and recommendations to the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate; and

 

Be it further resolved That the Academic Senate request the DE ad hoc committee to complete its charge by the end of May 2007 in the form of a written report; and

 

Be it further resolved That the Academic Senate recommends that a Distance Education Coordinator position be established to continue the work of the ad hoc committee and to coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of current activities, and to plan for and implement future DE efforts in support of HawCC’s mission.
