Fulbright visiting scholar to present on small scale biogas for electricity

Fulbright scholar Tjokorda Gde Tirta Nindhia, who is visiting from Indonesia, will present a lecture titled "Small Scale Biogas for Electricity (Indonesia Case Study)." Happening Thursday, November 10 at 5 p.m. in Kaneikeao (Building 379) at the Hawai'i CC campus in Hilo. Dr. Nindhia is a professor in the Engineering faculty at Uduyana Univesity in Bali, Indonesia.  He is currently on a Fulbright fellowship at Michigan State University working at the anaerobic digestion research and education research center (ADREC).

Hawai'i Community College's celebration of International Education Week 2016 will feature a series of cultural events that focus on this year's theme of "Myths and Legends."

Featured events include international tea and coffee tastings, exhibits highlighting a recent trip to Ireland by a group from Hawai'i CC, and the always popular Hawai'i CC World Culture Night. (See flyer above for details).

The "I Moving Lab" will arrive for the first time in Hilo this month, the latest iteration in a series of international lab-based convenings with intercultural arts practitioners and creative collaborators Jack Gray (Aotearoa), Dåkot-ta Alcantara-Camacho (Guåhan), Sammay Dizon (Phillippines) and Marýa Wethers (USA).

Pokemon Go became a highly lucrative pop culture craze during the past year, making it a perfect topic to study for Hawai‘i Community College students enrolled in MKT 120: Principles of Marketing. The students’ project concluded on Halloween with games and prizes at the various Poke Stops on the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo campus.

Hawai‘i Community College is partnering with Windward Community College to bring Windward CC’s Veterinary Assisting program to Hawai‘i Island students.

This will be a hybrid program that combines online and in-person learning and will be based at the Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui campus in Kona. The program begins in August 2017, but interested students are encouraged to get started now so they are prepared.

Hawai'i Community College was well represented at the YWCA Hawai'i Island sixth annual “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” event on Saturday, October 22.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jason Cifra won first place for shoe design and third place for money raised.

Celebrate Filipino History Month at book presentation

October is Filipino History Month! The Hawai'i Community College Mabuhay Club will host an enlightening presentation of the book: "Filipinas! Voices from the Descendants and Daughters of Hawaii's Plantation Era" presented by the wonderful Romel Dela Cruz. Book editor Dr. Patricia Brown will be in attendance. 

Electronics Technology student develops safety system for observatory during summer internship

Electronics Technology student Eric Paopao participated in the 2016 Akamai Internship Program during the summer and helped develop a safety mechanism at the UH88 Observatory on Mauna Kea.

Eric, a second-year Electronics Technology student at Hawai‘i Community College, was one of 29 students from Hawai‘i to participate in the internship this year, many of them coming from other University of Hawai‘i campuses.
