March 18 Message from VCAA Joni Onishi to Faculty and Lecturers

Aloha Faculty and Lecturers,

UH and Hawai`i CC are committed to completing the academic semester and enabling students to graduate on schedule. Hawai`i CC is transitioning to deliver most of its classes via distance education, either online or via Zoom/Real Presence/Google Meet to lessen the risk of our faculty, staff, and students contracting COVID-19.

While face-to-face instruction may move to other modalities, the campuses will remain open, and most services will continue to be provided.

COMMUNICATION TO STUDENTS

All faculty and lecturers are expected to directly communicate with your respective students to inform them of delivery modality, logistics, expectations, accommodations, etc. If you haven't already done so, you may want to survey your students to identify their access to technology or other resources you feel are important for your class.  Here is a sample Google Forms survey that you can copy and modify to send to your students.

A message has also been sent to students.

TESTING

Some of you have been asking about conducting testing via distance delivery. At this time, due to federal regulations regarding student authentication, classes that started the term as a distance education class will be given priority to proceed as they had planned with conducting proctored testing through the UH Testing Centers. Please be advised, though, that due to the need to provide for social distancing, our capacity to proctor tests in the current testing center facilities will be reduced.

For all face-to-face classes being transitioned to distance education, we need to assess the need for proctored testing services. Please complete in Google Sheet Proctored Test Request column K to O to identify test(s) that need a proctored environment, time limits, number of students, etc.

Once we can identify the campus' needs, we can better work on logistics and plans to increase testing capacity. At the same time, if there are tests that can be delivered in an unproctored environment (e.g., open book tests, low-stakes testing), please consider utilizing the testing tools in Laulima.

CENTERS

The Learning Center, Hale Kea Testing Center, Paepae `Ohua Native Hawaiian Student Success Center as well as Palamanui's Library and Learning Center and Ko Education Center will maintain their respective hours, 8 am to 4:15 pm; Paepae `Ohua, 8 am to 5 pm.

All of the Centers have computers for student use but may require prior appointments to assure the social distancing requirement is practiced. Centers will continue to provide services to support academic success:
