Project location:KMR Army base located on the Hilo Airport road
Opportunities: Ecosystem restoration and management, native plant propagation
Dates: 10/28, 10/29, 10/30
Students will work in groups of 2 or 3 and clear transects, using compasses and hip chains
while flagging off areas. Students are asked to commit to working 4 hours shifts from
8-noon or 1:00-5:00. Wear boots or good shoes (no open toes!), rain coats, long sleeves,
long pants and bring insect repellent.
Agency: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Special Project: Help rehabilitate the burned area around Bird Park. During the summer
of 2000, a large area immediately surrounding Bird Park (Kipuka Puaulu) in Hawai'i
Volcanoes National Park was devastated by a forest fire (click here
for more information). Volunteers are needed to help rehabilitate this area in order
to save the high level of native diversity in this Kipuka. If you are interested in
