The largest island in the Hawaiian Archipelago, the Big Island of Hawai'i is a vibrant blend of rich history, cultural diversity, and spectacular natural beauty. With snowcapped mountain peaks in winter, pasture lands, sugarcane fields, and rain swept valleys, the Big Island of Hawai'i has been described as a tropical mini continent. Hawai'i has white, black, and green sand beaches where there are opportunities to snorkel, scuba dive, sport fish, and surf. Hapuna Beach, on the west side of the island, is ranked in the top five most beautiful beaches in the world. Hiking trails take people from high altitude alpine areas, desert regions, and stark landscapes of lava fields to lush tropical rainforests. Steady rainfall on the windward side creates gullies and ravines, pleasant streams, serene ponds, and breathtaking waterfalls. The Hawai'i Community College Intensive English Program is located on the shared University of Hawai'i at Hilo campus in the city of Hilo, on the east side of the Big Island. Hilo is about 45 minutes by plane from Honolulu. A safe, small town with a population of 45,000, Hilo offers all the amenities of an American city such as shopping malls, movie theaters, and restaurants, while maintaining the charm of old Hawai'i and friendly people with warm smiles of aloha. Weather: The climate of Hawai'i is pleasant year round and changes very little. Temperatures can range from a daytime high of near 90 degrees F in the summer to a low of 60 F during winter nights. The eastern side of the island is the windward side, where most of the rain falls - accounting for its verdant plants and incredible array of tropical flowers. The leeward side is warmer and drier. |
