Dear Prospective Student in the Hospitality and Tourism Program (HOST),

Thank you for your interest in the new Hospitality and Tourism program at Hawaii Community College in both Hilo and West Hawaii. Classes start August 22, 2011. Please look over the following links for more detailed informaion on the HOST program:

  • Course Schedule that gives you an outline of the best sequence of classes
  • Course Descriptions that describes the courses in more detail.
  • Potential Jobs that lists the wide variety of jobs needed to operate the many types of hospitality businesses.

You may have already taken some of the required courses in other programs offered by Hawaii Community College or other colleges. Please check with the counselors/advisors to find out how courses may be credited toward the Hospitality and Tourism AAS degree. Also, STAR on MYUH will give you some guidance on your Academic Journey.

Courses may be offered by distance learning from Hawaii Community College or other campuses of the University of Hawaii system. Please check the distance learning Web sites for more details - www.hawaii.edu/dl.

You'll notice that two of the courses are Cooperative Education where you will work and learn at the same time in hospitality organizations that could range from small tour companies to world-class resorts. You’ll be able to build a personal network in the business that will help you make the right decisions about your career.

I'm happy that you are considering increasing your understanding of the largest private enterprises on our island and building your potential for promotion. Please contact me by phone (808) 322-4853 or by e-mail lightner@hawaii.edu with your questions.
