The Hāʻawi Kōkua Program promotes equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities to gain the maximum benefit from their educational/learning experience by participating fully in their regular courses and activities at HawCC.
A "Student with Disability" is defined as any student who has self-identified themselves with the Hāʻawi Kōkua program by providing the necessary documentation of their disability.
- Ensure access and educational equality in all HawCC programs and activities.
- Assisting students in maximizing their potential by encouraging independence, self-determination, and full participation in their educational experience.
- Provide reasonable academic accommodations for students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment.
- Foster a sensitive environment for students with disabilities that are conducive to their learning.
- Support students with disabilities in becoming independent, responsible, and productive community members.
- Provide consultation to students, faculty, and staff on disability issues and general access information.
Commitment & Compliance with the ADA - Section 504
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act - Section 84.4 of the Federal rules and regulations governing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973..., "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability shall, on the basis of disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity..."
- Students with disabilities must self-identify as being a person with a disability, to the Hāʻawi Kōkua Program Counselor.
- Students must provide relatively current documentation of their disability, which included information of their limitations.
- Students must request accommodations in a reasonable and timely manner.
- Students must abide with all HawCC policies and procedures, and be otherwise qualified for their degree program.
- Students are ensured that all disability-related information they have provided will be kept confidential.
Hawaiʻi Community College offers courses and programs at various campuses and physical locations, and is committed to providing equal access to all of these locations or course activities.
- I have the responsibility to self-identify having a disability, provide documentation of my disability from an appropriate professional, and express my need for accommodations, in a timely manner.
- I have a responsibility to demonstrate or document how my disability affects a particular delivery system, instructional method, or evaluation criteria when requesting accommodation.
- I have a responsibility to actively obtain, arrange, and participate in the search for accommodations and auxiliary aids. This responsibility extends to working with the institution to seek financial assistance from government agencies and private sources.
- I have the same obligations as any other student, to meet and maintain the institutions academic and technical standards.
- I have a right to be evaluated based on my abilities, not my disability. If my disability affects the outcome of an evaluation method, I am entitled to an evaluation by alternative means.
- I am entitled to an equal opportunity to learn. If the location, delivery system, or instructional methodology limits my access, participation in, or ability to benefit, I have a right to reasonable alterations in those aspects of the source (or program) to accommodate my disability.
- I have a right to appeal the institutionâs decision concerning accommodations. First internally, by filing a petition with the college, then by filing a complaint with the regional Office of Civil Rights or through the Civil Court System.

- Referral and collaboration with private and state community agencies to support students with disabilities and their academic success
- Mediation with faculty to advocate for the educational needs of students with disabilities
- Assurance for physical access on campus
- A commitment to provide equal access to all locations or course activities
- Understanding your rights as a person with a disability
- Activities and workshops offered to support and teach strategies for Academic Success
- Ongoing disability related counseling and support to encourage academic success
Specialized ServicesThe program Counselor will determine all requests for reasonable accommodations. Decisions made regarding accommodations are based upon the current documentation and the program or course requirements.
