What do our students need to be able to do “out there” that we’re responsible for “in here”?
Roles: office clerk, accounting clerk, teller, assistant bookkeeper
1. Apply basic math and computational skills to achieve accuracy in accounting systems.
2. Perform basic accounting tasks and maintain accurate accounting systems in profit and non-profit organizations. Analyze transactions accurately Journalize transactions Prepare financial statements accurately Analyze transactions using t-accounts Read and understand financial statements Prepare and analyze graphs Balance checking accounts Prepare 1040EZ and N-13 ethically and correctly Prepare 1040A and N-12 Prepare payroll tax forms Prepare personal budget Prepare business budget Calculate net pay Be able to locate information in manuals Familiar with GET and use taxes and forms Forecast financial data
3. Perform basic office functions using standard technologies. Type at 30 wpm 10-key at 130 spm Use accounting software proficiently Use common software (Excel and Word proficiently) Answer telephone politely Take messages correctly
4. Communicate with stakeholders in a manner that reflects organizational culture and sensitivity to diverse customer and community needs. Read at least 10th grade level Write coherent English paragraphs Present results in work orally in a persuasive manner Communicate thoughts effectively Recognize the culture of the organization in which you work Meet organizational culture expectations Consistently meet employer’s expectations
5. Demonstrate effective self-management through efficient use of time and personal commitments. Persist at problem analysis until answer is found
Use research and decision making skills to make informed choices and confirm information in the office. Screen visitors and calls Think critically Use reference materials Confirm information and sources Solve problems by making informed decisions
Create and manage company files according to company policies and standard procedures following general business ethics. Use various filing systems Backup records and files File so they can be retrieved Transfer and dispose of records
Communicate clearly through oral and written interactions complying with standard office etiquette. Communicate effectively Listen and follow directions Receive and disseminate information Taking accurate telephone messages Speak clearly to express feelings and ideas Make effective presentations to a variety of audiences
Take advantage of opportunity for continuous professional development in the profession. Receive instruction and criticism Be willing to learn new tasks Take opportunities for continuous learning Receive instruction in/practice and maintain employment readiness (includes updated resumes, interviewing techniques, and researching the company). |
